To observe the 100th Anniversary of Harriet Tubman‘s Death we will present:

The Struggles of African Americans in Queens, 1790-1870.

The presenter will be Richard Hourahan, Queens Historical Society Collections Manager and contributor to Friends of Freedom: The Underground Railroad in Queens and Long Island and The Road to Freedom: The Underground Railroad in New York and Beyond.

Topics covered will include: the existence of slavery in New York up to 1827; the process of gradual manumission from slavery; and the Freedman experience with civil rights and legal discrimination.

These programs are supported by public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

Additional support provided by the membership of the Greater Astoria Historical Society.
