A safari to see Lyndhurst, a 19th century Victorian Gothic mansion out in the wild, uncivilized, wastes of Westchester.
The day will start by catching the 9:20 Hudson Line train from Grand Central to Irvington NY. Your guide Steve will be available to assemble everyone and help anyone who has never bought a Metro-North ticket before. Tickets cost $8.50 each way. The trip takes about 45 minutes.
There will be a motorized mule available to carry picnic lunches, baggage, and any casualties who failed to wear stout walking shoes. Those who wish to bring their own motorized mules are encouraged to meet us at the Irvington station.
From the Irvington train station, we will load up the mechanical mule with any excess baggage and send it on to Lyndhurst. We will walk to the Croton Aqueduct Trail and follow it to Lyndhurst. This is a leisurely forty-five minute stroll, which afford the opportunity to see elements of the old aqueduct and local sights.
At Lyndhurst, the grounds are available for picnicking at no cost. Tours of the mansion take place hourly and cost $14.
Intrepid safariers can go on to see nearby Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving. Entrance to grounds/home is $12. We will also be near the Octagon House which is a sight never to be forgotten.
The trip takes place rain or shine unless it really, really rains in which case we will reschedule.
