The New York Nineteenth Century Society and The Obscura Society present A Tour of 19th Century Drinking Establishments. Evan Camp, New York City tour guide, and Rachel Klingberg of the NYNCS will lead our exploration of four remarkable establishments that have stood the test of time, from the lowliest Hole-in-the-Wall patronized by “river pirates and Water Street hags” to the grandest restaurant that established fine dining in America. There’s the illustrious Fraunces Tavern, where General Washington bid farewell to his officers after the Revolutionary War; Delmonico’s, the elegant restaurant that set the standard for fine dining in America; Bridge Cafe, the city’s oldest pub and once a notorious sailors’ dive and brothel; and Paris Cafe, a former hotel bar patronized by Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, and many other notable 19th-century personages.
